Jigsaw Leeds – A Trip Down Memory Lane

Calling all budding historians! Help us delve into the archives of Leeds City Centre and find out more about the heritage of where we shop.

Everyone loves an old photo of how things once were, of “times gone by” and we would love your help to pull together a collection of old images showing the Jigsaw building and surrounding area.

Jigsaw Leeds Needs Your Memories

Jigsaw as a company are committed to offering a unique shopping experience and our buildings play no small part in making that possible. We always look for stores with historical or arcitectural interest. No two stores are ever the same; something of which we are passionate and very proud.

Jigsaw Leeds is no exception. As may be seen from the gallery of images below, Jigsaw Leeds is bursting with magnificent architectural features.

Housed in what was formally the famous Collinson’s Cafe, the building dates back to the late 1800′s, at which time the great and good of Leeds were married here, attended tea dances and children were bribed into shopping trips with the promise of a sundae….so Mum could enjoy tea and cakes, accompanied by a string quartet to set the mood!

In the 1970′s, it was used as a bohemian hangout with a plethora of small boutiques to peruse for hidden fashion gems. Whilst prior to Jigsaw taking residence in 2003, the store was occupied by MVC, selling music, videos and dvds.

Apart from this brief glimpse of the past, our knowledge about the rich and wonderful history of our Leeds store is sketchy at best.

With your help we would like to fill in the gaps! We are appealing for anyone who has memories of the shop at any time in its history to get in touch and tell us their story.

Any pictures, newspaper clippings or anecdotes would be welcomed, as we would love to put together a book for customers visiting the store to enjoy and even add to. If you have anything of interest (no matter how small) please do get in touch!

If we are successful in our quest, we will organise a “heritage” day in store to share our findings towards the end of the summer. Naturally, with the Collinson’s past, we will be serving tea and cakes…even if the string quartet prooves to be a struggle!

The store can be called directly on 01132 457967. You may also email any documentation to;
enquiries@jigsaw-uk.co.uk.

Alternatively, post any photographs or information to the address below for the attention of our store manager, Jenny O’Hara McRandal. If you send us any original pictures, we promise that we will take copies and return them within 7 days. The store address is:

23 King Edward Street

Thanking you in advance for rummaging through the loft!
